“The most soothing is the broken-colored surface, so dark that it is almost black. It is like silence or emptiness. I want to cover everything with it. I repeat the ritual in each of my paintings. I cover and sweep out of sight soft and hot colors, joys, wishes and passions. All that remains is a fragile and quivering peace. Then new colors and spaces start to emerge. Where there seemed to be nothing, is the most essential.”
